Banderhobb! Weird Slaad variant?

Banderhobb! Weird Slaad variant?

Just wondering if anyone has checked out the Banderhobb from the 4e book Monster Manual 3. They are basically giant upright frogs that kidnap children as well as other victims and bring them back alive to their masters. The flavor links them to the Shadowfell but that's easily ignored and the entry itself is brimming with excellent flavor. I know that most of the folks here aren't very into 4e but this monster has some cool potential as a Slaad. There is a picture at the very bottom of the page.

On a side note, Monster Manual 3 was in my opinion probably the best monster manual to date. It actually had flavor text and actually tried to make some of the monsters seem like they were part of a living breathing world instead of just game pieces. Cheers

I'd almost want to say they are slaad who were corrupted by an evil entity of some sort.

No, those creatures sound purely fey. They wouldn't have any closer relation to Slaadi than the Grippli.

Yeah, they've seemed like more of a Fey creature to me, even if they have a Shadow origin rather than a Fey one. As the designer that created noted they are quite like the Goblins that haunt childhoods and lurk under the bed, without actually being D&D Goblins.

A common theme of goblins, trolls, and faery folk in European folklore is that they kidnap children and babies. Children born with birth deformities, excessive fussiness, or ravenous appetites were often believed to be an imposter troll/fairy child switched for the real one. The remedy to this problem was to physically abuse or attempt to kill the "imposter" child, which would prompt the troll/fairy parents to emerge and bring the real child back in exchange for the imposter child's safety. In other cases, the belief was that the human mother was impregnated by such creatures in her sleep, without her consent, and the remedy to this problem was to simply kill the child, as it was a "monster". Yeah, people were stupid in the past.
