What's going on with the Forgotten Realms? What is the Sundering?

Yes, not directly Planescape related, but... what is being done with the Forgotten Realms for 5th Edition, for the benefit of clueless folks like me?

1) In my 5E PHB, I see deceased Faerunian deities such as Azuth and Mystra listed as if alive. Are they back?

2) They pushed the campaign setting 100 years into the future for 4E. Is that still a thing, or did they retcon it so it never happened?

3) Does Toril connect to the Great Wheel again, with the deities back in their Planescape realms?

And of course, anything else important you care to add. Thanks in advance for the update!

There's a lot of unknowns.

There's a lot of unknowns. Folks better keyed into the FR setting/books/organized play than I suspect that more information will be forthcoming in novels and D&D Encounters. So far we know that the Sundering is the separation of Abeir and Toril and events surrounding that. Furthermore the Tyranny of Dragons adventure just released shows a FR sometime after the 4e Spellplague IIRC.

As of a month ago, here were some of the setting changes...

  • Mystra, Mask, Lathander and Helm are back, though Lathander and Helm only appear through chosen, not outright avatars.
  • Chosen are everywhere. The gods are hiding away bits of their divinity for some unknown purpose.
  • War is everywhere. Cormyr has survived what seemed like a losing war against Netheril and Sembia (since the nobles are back to their relaxing life in Suzail).
  • Returned Abeir is being un-returned. No further details about how this changes the map.
  • The Spellplague is over, and the plaguelands are gone.
  • The Underchasm has been filled.
  • Netheril has been nerfed, losing their two main floating cities.
  • The Weave is restored.
  • Myth Drannor has been trashed, yet again.
