Character Belief Questions for new PCs

In our campaign we are looking to expand on the 5th edition backgrounds and personality traits. The world of Planescape is a world centered around belief and we want to start bringing in our PC's beliefs from an early point in the game.

To that end I am composing a list of questions for each PC to answer 2 or 3 in order to provide hooks to develop their beliefs and have characters that believe something from the start.

What is your most cherished/hated memory?
What is the greatest lesson you have learnt thus far?
What did you fear when you are ten?
What is your deepest fear?
What do you want to become?
What do you fear you'll become?
Who/What do you serve and why do you serve them?
Have you ever been in love? With whom? Do you still love them?
If you must die, how do you want to die?
What was her/his name and why do you remember it?

I'm still trying to think up more questions. The idea is to have questions that can be delved into later but still answered fairly quickly. The short answer is both important to get players to actually give one and so that GMs don't have to dig through long complicated PC backstories, the campaign is supposed to be the great thing the PCs do not their backstory. Things that can be referenced quickly in other words.

Nice thought. I may have to implement this in my games.

This last question doesn't seem like it has much in the way of context though. Or am I missing something?

The idea is for the PC to talk about someone special. Originally it was just "What was her name and why do you remember it?" Generally meant to be a first love, or romantic memory, but could be something else.

I've done this or some

I've done this or some variation of it in my games for years. Usually at start, and then 3 game sessions in, and then 10 sessions in - as players get a feel for the characters.

"In three words, why are you doing this job / adventuring / here?"

This is a good idea. Here's another Q:

7th Sea

Many moons ago when I played 7th Sea, I came across their excellent list of 20 questions. The list has some questions relating to country, but these can easily be replace with the terms: location of birth, home world, home plane, etc. Similarly the questions relating to membership can be around Factions.

link to 20 questions

1. What country is your Hero from?

2. How would you physically describe yourself?

3. Does your character have recurring mannerisms?

4. What is your Hero's main motivation?

5. What is your Hero's greatest strength? Greatest weakness?

6. What are your Hero's most favorite things? Least favorite?

7. What about your Hero's psychology?

8. What is your Hero's single greatest fear?

9. What are your Hero's highest ambitions? Greatest love?

10. What is your Hero's opinion of his country? What does the fall of Gilneas mean to you?

11. Does your Hero have any prejudices?

12. Where do your Hero's loyalties lie?

13. Is your Hero in love? Is he married or betrothed?

14. What about your Hero's family?

15. How would your Hero's parents describe him?

16. Is your Hero a gentleman or gentlewoman?

17. How religious is your Hero? What sect of the Church does she follow?

18. Is your Hero a member of a guild, gentleman's club or secret society?

19. What does your Hero think of Sorcery?

20. If you could, what advice would you give your Hero?
