5th edition monster manual - planar creatures

Here is a list of all the extra planar creatures from the new MM with Planescape relevance (that I could find - hard to read that second page of the stat block index, especially!)

Modrons - Monodrone, Duodrone, Tridrone, Quadrone, Pentadrone, plus ROGUE MODRON!

Yugoloths - Ultroloth, Arcanaloth, Nycaloth, Messoloth, Maraenoloth

Demons - Balor, Dretch, Goristro, Bar-urgla, Quasit, Vrock, Hezro, Marilith, Glabrezu, Chasme, Nalfeshnee, Manes, Yochlil

Devils - Pit fiend, Barbed devil, Horned devil, Bearded devil, Ice devil, Spined devil, Chain devil, lemure, Erinyes

Genies - Djinni, Dao, Efreeti, Marid

Slaaddi - Red slaad, Blue slaad, Green slaad, Grey slaad, Death slaad, Slaad tadpole

Angels - Planetar, Solar, possibly more (Angels got four pages, after all)

Elementals - standard four (Earth, Air, Fire, Water)

Mephits - Ice mephit, Dust mephit, Smoke mephit, Magma mephit, Mud mephit, Steam mephit

Miscellaneous - Azer, Githyanki, Githzeri, Hell hound, Invisible stalker, Magmin, Night hag, Nightmare, Rakasha, Fire snake, Salamander, Water weird, Xorn, Phase spider, Coatil, Spectator

In the book, but status unknown (i.e original or 4E version) - Deva, Cambion, Succubus/Incubus, and something called an Empyrean (presumably some kind of Celestial.)

... no interest? No excitement? Me, I'm pumped! I can't wait, especially since looking over my new PHB. I can't be the only one...

I am indeed looking forward to the planar goodness in the new MM :)

One thing I recall from many Planescape adventures was the frequency with which PCs encountered more powerful planar creatures that weren't meant to be fought but to be talked with. Actually, it makes me wonder if Lair Actions similar to the Sphinx's could be appropriated to make conversing with planar beings on their home turf about more than just exchanging words...some sort of puzzle operating in the background about how to avoid potentially nasty side effects.

Just my two coppers.

Excited here! I started a comment several times, but realized I had nothing to contribute beyond: Woah, cool! Hehe...

Ari Marmell out together a very handy monster sorter spreadsheet over here: http://mouseferatu.com/

Some quick thoughts...

Magmin and Magma Mephit always seemed redundant to me. Anyone else? A page better spent on the barghest or some other planar critter IMO.

Base Modrons are weak, the most powerful - the Pentadrone - only CR 2.

The Deva is listed under the "Angel" header, and folks at ENWorld report it is like the 2 version, not the 4e version.

The Empyrean is like the 2e Titan, a huge celestial born of the gods of mostly CG alignment but with a few bad apples. Very powerful (CR 23)!!

The Succubus/Incubus is a fiend of ambiguous and shifting allegiance from what I've gathered. This design decision may have been the result of a poll which came out about 50/50 on the issue of whether a Succubus should be a demon or devil.

EDIT: Oh, and I don't think Marraenoloths are in the MM; there's no listing for them in the index which was shared online.

That site also lists the Shadow demon as being in the book, and the Oni (Ogre Mage, i.e. Estavan), the Death dog (the basis for the Aoskian hound, and of course Wererats! And I apparently misread the tiny print, so apologies for the lack of any Marraenoloths.

Modron challege ratings

I went back and checked the xp for the Modrons in 2nd Ed Planescape, and they appear about as weak there as in 5e (that is, the lowest five ranks). In 2nd Ed, a Pentadrone is slightly weaker than a Spinagon. In 5e, they are equal. So I think that Modrons have not in fact been downgraded in strength in the new edition... mind you I haven't seen hit point totals or ACs for any of the 5e Modrons, which may change my opinion.

Also, I know that in the "Demon" section there is a sidebar on Demons and summoning powers, listing what Demons can summon what other Demons as backup. I don't know if similar sidebars exist for Devils and Yugoloths, but I presume that the Demon sidebar could be used as a model for giving summoning powers to the others.

While I think there's only a being a mention of a few planar creatures that are Legendary Creatures, there was an article on Critical Hits that described a Legendary Creature as sort of being like a giant target on a map. Which I could see as many Legendary Creatures do have powers and effects over a region with a range measured in miles. Things like Ancient Red Dragons causing earthquakes within 6 miles, and causing tears into the Plane of Fire, and water to be warm and sulphur tainted within 1 mile.

Could be useful to expand with many Planar Creatures, and it's certainly something that Powers obviously do as well. The projection of any influence of any creature of power or strong belief would leave obvious signs of presence in the surrounding area.

I read that Devils also get a sidebar on summoning, so guessing the same probably holds for Yugoloths. Cambions are the offspring of a humanoid (usually a human) and any kind of "Fiend" as fiend is defined in 5E - Demons and Devils, but also 'loths, Night hags, Rakhasa, etc. If I didn't mention it before, Succubi/Inccubi are neutral evil fiends that work with any of the evil lower-planar races. They are neither Demons nor Devils.

Also, Cambions are depicted

Also, Cambions are depicted with small horns, a tail, bat wings and red skin. The text does mention that not all of them look alike. Grazzt's offspring are cited as having black skin and six fingers on each hand, for instance.
