5e DMG modron art

The 5e DMG has been delayed three weeks from Nov 18 to Dec 9. On the upshot, Mike Mearls shared this picture of Modrons marching from the DMG!

The Great Modron March?

...that's gotta be the Great Modron March! Why else would a bunch of characters be hiding from them? (Although that elf does look fishily chaotic to me. Just kidding.)

This is awesome. The city in back isn't made out of gears, but perhaps it's just Regulus, which would be a very large gear -- that would make the skyline in back the Modron Cathedral. I see monodrones, a tridrone, a quadrone, and I'm not actually entirely sure what the midground one is. Possibly a pentadrone. This looks really faithful to 2e style.

The Great Modron March by Justin Gerard.

I've been closely following the art direction for 5e and it is turning out to be the best illustrated version of D&D so far. Minor quibbles like the anime-esque Succubus and Cambion, and a few pieces of "pose for the camera" aside, it's lovely art that is mercifully sparse on the chainmail cheesecake while greatly increasing character diversity and really capturing a wide emotional milieu.

A friend of mine got the Monster Manual early from volunteering at PAX. Modrons are in it, but only go up to either quadrone or pentadrone. I didn't read the entry, so I don't know if the higher castes are mentioned and just not detailed, but given their return to 2e cosmological principles, I doubt they were cut.

They're statted?

The monster manual actually stats up modrons? Double awesome!

I can understand reluctance to stat out hierarch modrons. I'm sure hierarchs exist -- the modrons as a race hardly make sense without a hierarchy going all the way up to Primus -- but if there are only 100 decatons in the universe, they ought to be about as powerful as minor deities already.

On the other hand, solars do rank about at the "minor deity" level of power -- a friend of mine put it amusingly, that a solar deva is probably a solar deva because they're not interested in the deity gig -- and they were statted. But named fiends were statted in specialty books, which is the kind of place where I guess you might see hierarch modrons.

Quote:

_GM: Pale Night is an obyrith.
Diol: But I think if we meet her it's kind of a moot point
Xivilai: If we meet Pale Night we're dead already.
Diol: Pretty much
_GM: Pale Night is CR 21 and can make everybody looking at her roll a Fort save versus instant horrific death. You will not be meeting Pale Night personally. :^)
Khep: yeah, I'd like to avoid that too

Although, if we were going to change anything about modrons I might change the number of hierarchs. In the old arrangement the number of level-n hierarchs was n squared. If decatons are often met by PCs they might be a more substantial species -- 10 factorial, or 3,628,800, might be a nice number. Having the level progression be factorial would mean that the number of hierarchs at each level would divide the number of those below, making division of supervision easy.
