"But whoever looks from inside, knows that everything is new. The events that happen are always the same. But the creative depths of man are not always the same.”

– C.G. Jung, The Red Book

A kind of fluid interpenetration belongs to the very nature of all archetypes. They can only be roughly circumscribed at best. Their living meaning comes out more from their presentation as a whole than from a single formulation. Every attempt to focus them more sharply is immediately punished by the intangible core of meaning losing its luminosity. No archetype can be reduced to a simple formula. It is a vessel which we can never empty, and never fill. It has a potential existence only, and when it takes shape in matter it is no longer what it was. It persists throughout the ages and requires interpreting ever anew. The archetypes are the imperishable elements of the unconscious, but they change their shape continually.

-- C.G. Jung, “The Psychology of the Child Archetype” (1940)

Inhuman Geometries: Saul Bass’s “Phase IV”

http://weirdfictionreview.com/2015/04/inhuman-geometries-saul-basss-phase-iv/

Quote:
Visually, the movie is obsessed with geometry, shapes, angles. A running theme through the movie is shots of the various geometric creations of both ant and human. For the ants, we have tall angular pillars rising out of the earth, reflective obelisks, vast crop circles, and what can only be described as reverse-anthills. Beyond what the ants create, meanwhile, there’s the geodesic dome that serves as the home base for the human protagonists, itself surrounded by metal globes attached to the dome with long piping. Before long, you’ll begin keeping track of every circle and globe, every angular obelisk and sharp corner. Human characters draw squares in the dust on a porch handrail. Ants fry a motherboard by holding together in the shape of a circle, sacrificing themselves. Our intrepid human scientists visualize the “language” of the ants on a computer screen in fluctuating parabolic arcs. Everyone, everything, is making and surrounded by tightly defined geometric shapes. Everyone is encircled by something and in turn encircling something.

Some great links Unsung - glad to see the annual animations are back!

I love Paul Robertson's stuff! The Gong video was interesting - couldn't decide if it was the Far Realms or the realm of a (possibly insane?) power devoted to money.

The Resonant Chamber was cool, I could see it as a strange being moored in Sigil from some unknown plane outside the Great Wheel.

The illustrations for the unfinished comic were interesting though it seems I couldn't actually access any of the comic?

Death To Extremist made me think of those corresponding orb beings in the Positive and Negative planes.

Still need to read A Day at the Park, I liked the illustrations though.

The purpose of the Filāḥa Texts Project is to publish, translate and elucidate the written works collectively known as the Kutub al-Filāḥa or ‘Books of Husbandry’ compiled by Arab, especially Andalusi, agronomists mainly between the 10th and 14th centuries (see Authors & Works). These systematic and detailed manuals of agriculture, horticulture and animal husbandry have been somewhat neglected and remain largely unknown in the Anglophone world - apart from some of the Yemeni works they have never been translated into English. They not only provide primary source material for the understanding of what has been called the ‘Islamic Green Revolution’ but constitute a rich body of knowledge concerning a traditional system of husbandry which is as valid today as it was a thousand years ago and has much relevance to future sustainable agriculture.

Using the options presented in this article, you can play a mystic to 5th level, following one of two psionic orders and training in that order’s unique disciplines. Following the Order of the Awakened allows you to create a mystic who manipulates the minds and awareness of other creatures, and who can tap into unseen psionic power both in and out of
combat. Following the Order of the Immortal allows you to create a mystic who focuses psionic power in combat, similar to the battlemind or psychic warrior of previous editions. Other options for the mystic will appear as the playtest progresses and we gain valuable feedback about the classʼs mechanics in play

“Where Humanity gets it wrong, by your time, is in imagining Atlantis as having any kind of quantifiable existence. Which of course it hasn’t; not in the way they imagine, anyway. There have been an awful lot of Atlantises, will be quite a few more.

“It’s just a symbol. A symbol of the art.

“The True Atlantis is inside you, just as it’s inside all of us. The sunken land beneath the dark sea, lost beneath the waves of wet, black stories and myths that break upon the shores of our minds. Atlantis is the Shadow-land. The birth-place of civilization. The fair land in the west that is lost to us, but remains forever, true birthplace and true goal.”

Great stuff! Fever the Ghost made me think that there are different levels to planar reality, that our planet or even universe is just a disco ball to the fun-loving dancers of the Far Realms. :-)

I really like the Glorantha art, it's rather creative and feels like a fusion of different cultures. Listening to Omnia's stuff, very enjoyable.

Usual caveats about not enforcing/refuting beliefs:

Seemed like something a Cipher would say to a Guvner

"To silence ourselves is to open our senses to the invisible—to open our mouths and eyes to the ever-present—yet ever-occulted—symbols that live all around us. If we do this whole-heartedly, our world becomes animated like a divine icon. But if we can’t let go of our need for rational certitude at every step of the way, we risk being lead further astray that we could possibly imagine. "
-Aaron Cheak

=-=-=

Sensates talking to the more orderly factions, maybe also the Merkants and Takers:

"It’s better not to know so much about what things mean or how they might be interpreted...Psychology destroys the mystery, this kind of magic quality. It can be reduced to certain neuroses or certain things, and since it is now named and defined, it’s lost its potential for a vast, infinite experience.”
-David Lynch on the analysis of art

“Art, as I conceive it, is resistant to psychoanalysis. It evokes the mystery without which the world would not exist. … Nobody in his right mind believes that psychoanalysis could elucidate the mystery of the universe.”
-Rene Margitte, same subject
=-=-=

“...ultimately the meaning in the dream is not important. It is best not to regard the dream as correspondence from another entity to you, not even from another part of you that you do not know. … It may sound strange, but this idea of meaning must be abandoned before the mind can find complete liberation. … Instead penetrate to what is below meaning, the pure base of experience.”

LINES WRITTEN IN EARLY SPRING

I HEARD a thousand blended notes,
While in a grove I sate reclined,
In that sweet mood when pleasant thoughts
Bring sad thoughts to the mind.

To her fair works did Nature link
The human soul that through me ran;
And much it grieved my heart to think
What man has made of man.

Through primrose tufts, in that green bower,
The periwinkle trailed its wreaths;
And 'tis my faith that every flower
Enjoys the air it breathes.

The birds around me hopped and played,
Their thoughts I cannot measure:--
But the least motion which they made
It seemed a thrill of pleasure.

The budding twigs spread out their fan,
To catch the breezy air;
And I must think, do all I can,
That there was pleasure there.

If this belief from heaven be sent,
If such be Nature's holy plan,
Have I not reason to lament
What man has made of man?
-Wordsworth

"When I say sky, I have the same sense of intimacy with it that our feet have with the earth. […] Our bare foot knows much about the earth, but the knowledge of wind and star is already in our hands […] A star is no further or nearer for us than this stone or that flower. We could pick up the stone; we could pick the flower and draw it into our presence. In the end, this also holds true for our intimate dealings with the sky. From a certain point on, what we take into ourselves is equal."
-Jean Gesber

The shining winter sky
is close enough to touch;
and you too are this sky.
No reason to distinguish.
For all the stars flow through your veins.

"In Spring, when the heidelberry preserve is accidentally spilt on the tablecloth, the cleaning lady has to go to a lot of trouble to wash the stains out. And at least some remain. In Autumn, however, six months later, when the berries on the branches dry out and begin to die, the stains wash out of the cloth without any effort.

If the grape harvest was in Autumn, then the grapevines begin to bloom six months later. They have a very short flourishing period, but an uncommonly fine and delicate scent. At the same time, the wine in the cellar begins to ferment and it will only settle again in the barrels and bottles when the flourishing [of the vines] has died away.

The fact that something changes its state or its form from what it once was does not mean that it has disappeared from the world; it is perhaps, as one says, dead; but you see yourself how little this actually means. For everything that hasn’t been born yet or that hasn’t happened yet―thus everything that one in an almost despairing way calls the future―must also be dead."

William Butler Yeats: The Stolen Child

Where dips the rocky highland
Of Sleuth Wood in the lake,
There lies a leafy island
Where flapping herons wake
The drowsy water rats;
There we've hid our faery vats,
Full of berrys
And of reddest stolen cherries.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.

Where the wave of moonlight glosses
The dim gray sands with light,
Far off by furthest Rosses
We foot it all the night,
Weaving olden dances
Mingling hands and mingling glances
Till the moon has taken flight;
To and fro we leap
And chase the frothy bubbles,
While the world is full of troubles
And anxious in its sleep.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.

Where the wandering water gushes
From the hills above Glen-Car,
In pools among the rushes
That scarce could bathe a star,
We seek for slumbering trout
And whispering in their ears
Give them unquiet dreams;
Leaning softly out
From ferns that drop their tears
Over the young streams.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.

Away with us he's going,
The solemn-eyed:
He'll hear no more the lowing
Of the calves on the warm hillside
Or the kettle on the hob
Sing peace into his breast,
Or see the brown mice bob
Round and round the oatmeal chest.
For he comes, the human child,
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping than he can understand.

And an awesome interpretation of the poem by the Waterboys.

With my eyes closed and the sun beating through my eyelids, the red glow of sunlight fell like love upon me and filled me from head to toe with spectral warmth that perhaps only the womb had given me before. A plural telepathic voice, quiet and feminine, spoke to me...

Hawkwind - Master of the Universe - lyrics
Sounds like a Signer:

I am the centre of this universe
The wind of time is blowing through me
And it's all moving relative to me,
It's all a figment of my mind
In a world that I've designed
I'm charged with cosmic energy
Has the world gone mad or is it me?

I am the creator of this universe
And all that it was meant to be
So that we might learn to see
This foolishness that lives in us
And stupidity that we must suss
How to banish from our minds
If you call this living I must be blind.

Monster Monday: El Naddaha

Quote:
An el naddaha is the daughter born from the rare union between a nereid and a janni. Although such offspring retains many characteristics of both parents, the el naddaha later develops unique talents during her lone existence that set her apart from her progenitors. The utter majority have a dark side that compels them to call men to their death, though some have been known to lend their power to a good cause when approached with caution and expensive gifts—a task better brought to a successful conclusion when undertaken by a woman.

These lethal seductresses favor cities along rivers that cross the desert and their deltas as hunting grounds. An el naddaha often invades the dreams of a potential male victim that stays near the riverbanks for many nights before luring him outside some time later. Such exercise greatly saps the willpower of her pray, rendering him compliant when they met in the flesh at last.

DMG Elements: Adventure Complications—Quandaries

http://www.koboldpress.com/dmg-elements-adventure-complications-quandaries/

Quote:
The Dungeon Master’s Guide for fifth edition D&D gives a slew of great advice for tackling the role of the Dungeon Master. Being a Dungeon Master means making quick decisions and anticipating the actions of your players at the table, but it also means thinking up vast worlds and creating adventures for your players to overcome. After your players have played roleplaying games for a while, adventures can become formulaic in this manner: hear about a problem, have an offer of reward, fight minions, search for clues, fight the boss, get the reward. The Dungeon Master’s Guide offers moral quandaries that will present your players with difficult choices and create memorable adventures that are different from the norm.

Grant Morrison on his upcoming Santa Claus: Year One book:

http://www.comicbookresources.com/article/exclusive-grant-morrison-tells-santa-claus-year-one-in-klaus

Quote:
It seems so obvious, but it's been very engrossing, going back to the roots of Santa, the Siberian shamanistic kind of version of it, and then you've got the character Sinterklaas, and everything built up towards the familiar guy that we know.

I really thought it was just a great, untold story, to hear how that happened. And then to go at it as a big, big epic fantasy that's got a little bit of "Conan the Barbarian," a little bit of "Lord of the Rings," a little bit of sci-fi.

Usual caveat about not

Usual caveat about not endorsing/refuting beliefs:

"The unground is an eternal nothing, but makes an eternal beginning as a craving. For the nothing is a craving after something. But as there is nothing that can give anything, accordingly the craving itself is the giving of it, which yet also is a nothing, or merely a desirous seeking. And that is the eternal origin of Magic, which makes within itself where there is nothing; which makes something out of nothing, and that in itself only, though this craving is also a nothing, that is, merely a will. It has nothing, and there is nothing that can give it anything; neither has it any place where it can find or repose itself…We recognize…the eternal Will-spirit as God, and the moving life of the craving as Nature. For there is nothing prior, and either is without beginning, and each is a cause of the other, and an eternal bond. Thus the Will-spirit is an eternal knowing of the unground, and the life of the craving an eternal body of the will."
-Böhme, Mysterium Pansophicum

“The stars are the fountain veins of God.”

"Picture the following scene, a cartoon cliché. You’re standing on a darkened street corner at night. Suddenly an immense form appears on the brick wall ahead, a terrible, monstrous shadow cast by something coming around the corner. When the creature casting the shadow finally appears, it turns out to be an inoffensive kitten. The whole thing was a trick of the light.

Now, according to our conventional way of seeing things, the part of the scene where “truth" is revealed is the moment when the kitten shows itself. It’s at that point that you realize that the monstrous shadow was an illusion, that what was actually coming towards you was in fact the most mundane, benign, and knowable of God’s creatures. Yet if we entertain the concept of the Real I’ve just outlined, things change. The moment you were closest to “truth” — the moment you were most in touch with the Real — was in the interval during which you did not know what you were looking at. For then the monstrous shadow pointed you to a zone of potentiality with which you are not familiar, an open space between the little world you think you know and the big, real, unknowable world. What I mean to say here is that it is in moments of uncertainty, when we don’t know what we’re looking at, that we are epistemologically aligned with the true nature of existence."
-JF Martel

"Philosophy must have nothing in common with logic; philosophy is an art which aims at breaking the logical continuity of argument and bringing man out on the shoreless sea of imagination, the fantastic tides of everything that is equally possible and impossible."

No need to apologize! And

No need to apologize! And here's Paracelsus alias Philippus Theophrastus Aureolus Bombastus von Hohenheim:

"Life is like music, it must be composed by ear, feeling and instinct, not by rule. Nevertheless one had better know the rules, for they sometimes guide in doubtful cases, though not often."

"The dose makes the poison."

"We do not know it because we are fooling away our time with outward and perishing things, and are asleep in regard to that which is real within ourself."

"Thoughts create a new heaven, a new firmament, a new source of energy, from which new arts flow."

"Nature also forges man, now a gold man, now a silver man, now a fig man, now a bean man."

"This is alchemy, and this is the office of Vulcan; he is the apothecary and chemist of the medicine."

“Two things fill the mind with ever-renewing wonder and awe, the more often and the more intensely the mind is drawn to think of them: the starry heavens above me and the moral law within me.

The former view of a countless multitude of worlds annihilates my importance as an animal creature, which after it has been for a short time provided with vital power, one knows not how, must again give back the matter of which it was formed to the planet it inhabits (a mere speck in the universe). The second, on the contrary, infinitely elevates my worth as an intelligence by my personality, in which the moral law reveals to me a life independent of animality and even of the whole sensible world, at least so far as may be inferred from the destination assigned to my existence by this law, a destination not restricted to the conditions and limits of this life, but reaching into the infinite.”

From Kill Six Billion Demons

From Kill Six Billion Demons

http://killsixbilliondemons.com

Quote:

On the night of the 88th Marquis, YISUN queried his servants that were gathered in the hall of the Glass Temple of the 90th water. “Where shall we resolve this tale of the one we have not met yet?” said YISUN, and smiled in the 3rd way.

The servant Nighzmarquls, who was recitant said:

“The key is set, unlock the veil and show her the firmament of all things. Take her to the truth of unclothed and let its glory burn her.”

The servant Gordon was eager to please YISUN and said:

“The third eye has been burnt into the flesh, mind and soul of one unready. Like a tea party with the rug pulled out from under it, reality would alternately crumble and shatter, but this mind lacks the breadth to see it for what it is, so would see nothing at all, until the pieces settled into a new order, and the nothingness resolved itself into something else.”

The servant Driftwood, who had arrived late to the gathered, cast off his suggestion:

“Apparently she is going to the distant future.”

YISUN was pleased for he saw these were good things, and made it so.

"In a world which is indeed

"In a world which is indeed our world, the one we know, a world without devils, sylphides, or vampires, there occurs an event which cannot be explained by the laws of this same familiar world. The person who experiences the event must opt for one of two possible solutions: either he is the victim of an illusion of the senses, of a product of the imagination – and laws of the world then remain what they are; or else the event has indeed taken place, it is an integral part of reality – but then this reality is controlled by laws unknown to us."

Lemurian Time War:

http://xenopraxis.net/readings/ccru_lemuriantimewar.pdf

Quote:
In the hyperstitional model Kaye outlined, fiction is not opposed to the real. Rather, reality is understood to be composed of fictions – consistent semiotic terrains that condition perceptual, affective and behaviorial responses. Kaye considered Burroughs’ work to be ‘exemplary of hyperstitional practice’. Burroughs construed writing – and art in general – not aesthetically, but functionally, - that is to say, magically, with magic defined as the use of signs to produce changes in reality.

Kaye maintained that it was ‘far from accidental’ that Burroughs’s equation of reality and fiction had been most widely embraced only in its negative aspect – as a variety of ‘postmodern’ ontological skepticism – rather than in its positive sense, as an investigation into the magical powers of incantation and manifestation: the efficacy of the virtual. For Kaye, the assimilation of Burroughs into textualist postmodernism constituted a deliberate act of ‘interpretevist sabotage’, the aim of which was to de-functionalise Burroughs’s writings by converting them into aesthetic exercises in style. Far from constituting a subversion of representative realism, the postmodern celebration of the text without a referent merely consummates a process that representative realism had initiated. Representative realism severs writing from any active function, surrendering it to the role of reflecting, not intervening in, the world. It is a short step to a dimension of pristine textuality, in which the existence of a world independent of discourse is denied altogether.

Dylan Thomas, "The Force That Through the Green Fuse Drives the Flower"

The force that through the green fuse drives the flower
Drives my green age; that blasts the roots of trees
Is my destroyer.
And I am dumb to tell the crooked rose
My youth is bent by the same wintry fever.

The force that drives the water through the rocks
Drives my red blood; that dries the mouthing streams
Turns mine to wax.
And I am dumb to mouth unto my veins

How at the mountain spring the same mouth sucks.
The hand that whirls the water in the pool
Stirs the quicksand; that ropes the blowing wind
Hauls my shroud sail.
And I am dumb to tell the hanging man
How of my clay is made the hangman’s lime.

The lips of time leech to the fountain head;
Love drips and gathers, but the fallen blood
Shall calm her sores.
And I am dumb to tell a weather’s wind
How time has ticked a heaven round the stars.

And I am dumb to tell the lover’s tomb
How at my sheet goes the same crooked worm.

But what about some of our older adventures, particularly one about a Very Infamous Monk? Are you ready for a Design Challenge?

When Occult Adventures first made its way through playtesting, one question I often thought was, "How could our older adventures be retold with these new options?"

Being a rather large fan of Russian fairy tales and folk lore, I am quite fond of the Reign of Winter Adventure Path, so of course, I immediately gravitated towards that one to pick for this Design Challenge...

Out of the Abyss: D&D's next campaign goes deep into the Underdark

Out of the Abyss is set in one of D&D’s most well-known realms, the shadowy netherworld known as the Underdark. The native habitat of iconic races like the drow and duergar, it’s also home to some of the franchise’s most nefarious monsters — giant spiders, maniacal beholders and deadly mind flayers.

But how do you build a campaign that spans from a first level all the way to the level 15, while making it both welcoming to new players and challenging enough for experienced adventuring parties? Polygon sat down with Chris Perkins, principal designer for D&D at Wizards of the Coast, to find out.

They are scholars of the planes themselves, and they gather wherever traveler’s tales are told—be it a tiefling bar on the outskirts of Hell or around a crackling campfire of clockwork angels on the fields of law. They are as at home on a ship of sea, or stars, or aether as they are walking a tavern’s stage. The horizon calls them onward and outward.
