From the Kickstarter page for The Chuubo's Marvelous Wish-Granting Engine:

Quote:

Sometime after the world drowned I found myself on one of the boats that go to Town.

I didn’t know yet that the world had fallen.

Being and nothingness were swallowed, both of them, by the tidal wave of the Outside, but I hadn’t noticed yet, because I’d been living in one of the places that got covered by it, and so I’d stopped existing in any kind of defined way for a little while.

Then one of the exploring boats found Suzhou, where I’d been living. It made Suzhou exist again, more or less. It stopped being a wild, chaotic delirium and became a place again . . . more or less.

I don’t think I was fully real again yet when I boarded.

I didn’t wake up, not all the way, until the boat crested the horizon of Big Lake and I saw the dockside settlement of Fortitude for the first time. Then it was like my heart woke up, and everything that had been black and white became color, and the textures of the world came back, and sound had richness and deepness once again.

It wasn’t because I’d been unreal, exactly.

It was part of it, I think, but only part of it. It was because . . . it was because as soon as I saw Fortitude I understood that work would be rewarded; that things had a beautiful simplicity; and that I had a home.

I guess that if you’re reading this then you are real. As I write this, you are mildly notional, of course. You can’t possibly be as real as the wood of the buildings, the depth of the air, the sounds of fish being sliced open and the smell of marlin cooking on a limestone slab. You’re part of the diffuse potential of “you could be reading this.”

But by the time you actually see this I guess you must be someone real. You must be a real, physical person, in one of the reclaimed regions, and maybe not even knowing that the world was lost. You might not even realize that you’ve been cheated, that there could be —

That there was more.

So come. Come to a little place called Town, in the middle of nowhere, circled by its reborn sun. Come, at least in play, and maybe in person if you can stand giving up some of the modern luxuries, and feel what it’s like to really live.

There is so much to experience here. You could live.

The moment

The moment

The moment when, after many years
of hard work and a long voyage
you stand in the centre of your room,
house, half-acre, square mile, island, country,
knowing at last how you got there,
and say, I own this,

is the same moment when the trees unloose
their soft arms from around you,
the birds take back their language,
the cliffs fissure and collapse,
the air moves back from you like a wave
and you can't breathe.

No, they whisper. You own nothing.
You were a visitor, time after time
climbing the hill, planting the flag, proclaiming.
We never belonged to you.
You never found us.
It was always the other way round.

"But all worthy things that are in peril as the world now stands, those are my care. And for my part, I shall not wholly fail of my taks, though Gondor should perish, if anything passes through this night that can still grow fair or bear fruit and flower again in days to come. For I also am a steward. Did you not know?"

Pablo Neruda, Clenched Soul

We have lost even this twilight.
No one saw us this evening hand in hand
while the blue night dropped on the world.

I have seen from my window
the fiesta of sunset in the distant mountain tops.

Sometimes a piece of sun
burned like a coin in my hand.

I remembered you with my soul clenched
in that sadness of mine that you know.

Where were you then?
Who else was there?
Saying what?
Why will the whole of love come on me suddenly
when I am sad and feel you are far away?

The book fell that always closed at twilight
and my blue sweater rolled like a hurt dog at my feet.

Always, always you recede through the evenings
toward the twilight erasing statues.

From Plato's Timaeus:

From Plato's Timaeus:

"Wherefore the mother and receptacle of all created and visible and in any way sensible things is not to be termed earth or air or fire or water, or any of their compounds, or any of the elements from which these are derived, but is an invisible and formless being which receives all things and in some mysterious way partakes of the intelligible, and is most incomprehensible."

"Let us consider this question more precisely. Is there any self-existent fire ? and do all those things which we call self-existent exist ? or are only those things which we see, or in some way perceive through the bodily organs, truly existent, and nothing whatever besides them ? And is all that which, we call an intelligible essence nothing at all, and only a name ? Here is a question which we must not leave unexamined or undetermined, nor must we affirm too confidently that there can be no decision ; neither must we interpolate in our present long discourse a digression equally long, but if it is possible to set forth a great principle in a few words, that is just what we want."

" The bones and flesh, and other similar parts of us, were made as follows. The first principle of all of them was the generation of the marrow. For the bonds of life which unite the soul with the body are made fast there, and they are the root and foundation of the human race. The marrow itself is created out of other materials : God took such of the primary triangles [!] as were straight and smooth, and were adapted by their perfection to produce fire and water, and air and earth; these, I say, he separated from their kinds, and mingling them in due proportions with one another, made the marrow out of them to be a universal seed of the whole race of mankind ; and in this seed he then planted and enclosed the souls, and in the original distribution gave to the marrow as many and various forms as the different kinds of souls were hereafter to receive. That which, like a field, was to receive the divine seed, he made round every way, and called that portion of the marrow, brain, intending that, when an animal was perfected, the vessel containing this substance should be the head ; but that which was intended to contain the remaining and mortal part of the soul he distributed into figures at once around and elongated, and he called them all by the name 'marrow'; and to these, as to anchors, fastening the bonds of the whole soul, he proceeded to fashion around them the entire framework of our body, constructing for the marrow, first of all a complete covering of bone."

"But now the argument seems to require that we should set forth in words another kind, which is difficult of explanation and dimly seen. What nature are we to attribute to this new kind of being? We reply, that it is the receptacle, and in a manner the nurse, of all generation."

"... as the several elements never present themselves in the same form, how can any one have the assurance to assert positively that any of them, whatever it may be, is one thing rather than another? No one can. But much the safest plan is to speak of them as follows:-Anything which we see to be continually changing, as, for example, fire, we must not call "this" or "that," but rather say that it is "of such a nature"; nor let us speak of water as "this"; but always as "such"; nor must we imply that there is any stability in any of those things which we indicate by the use of the words "this" and "that," supposing ourselves to signify something thereby; for they are too volatile to be detained in any such expressions as "this," or "that," or "relative to this," or any other mode of speaking which represents them as permanent. We ought not to apply "this" to any of them, but rather the word "such"; which expresses the similar principle circulating in each and all of them; for example, that should be called "fire" which is of such a nature always, and so of everything that has generation. That in which the elements severally grow up, and appear, and decay, is alone to be called by the name "this" or "that"; but that which is of a certain nature, hot or white, or anything which admits of opposite equalities, and all things that are compounded of them, ought not to be so denominated..."

"...Wherefore also we must acknowledge that there is one kind of being which is always the same, uncreated and indestructible, never receiving anything into itself from without, nor itself going out to any other, but invisible and imperceptible by any sense, and of which the contemplation is granted to intelligence only..."

"And there is another nature of the same name with it, and like to it, perceived by sense, created, always in motion, becoming in place and again vanishing out of place, which is apprehended by opinion and sense."

" And there is a third nature, which is space, and is eternal, and admits not of destruction and provides a home for all created things, and is apprehended without the help of sense, by a kind of spurious reason, and is hardly real ; which we beholding as in a dream, say of all existence that it must of necessity be in some place and occupy a space, but that what is neither in heaven nor in earth has no existence. Of these and other things of the same kind, relating to the true and waking reality of nature, we have only this dreamlike sense, and we are unable to cast off sleep and determine the truth about them. For an image, since the reality, after which it is modelled, does not belong to it, and it exists ever as the fleeting shadow of some other, must be inferred to be in another [i.e. in space ], grasping existence in some way or other, or it could not be at all. But true and exact reason, vindicating the nature of true being, maintains that while two things [i.e. the image and space] are different they cannot exist one of them in the other and so be one and also two at the same time."

" my verdict is that being and space and generation, these three, existed in their three ways before the heaven ; and that the nurse of generation, moistened by water and inflamed by fire, and receiving the forms of earth and air, and experiencing all the affections which accompany these, presented a strange variety of appearances ; and being full of powers which were neither similar nor equally balanced, was never in any part in a state of equipoise, but swaying unevenly hither and thither, was shaken by them, and by its motion again shook them ; and the elements when moved were separated and carried continually, some one way, some another ; as, when rain is shaken and winnowed by fans and other instruments used in the threshing of corn, the close and heavy particles are borne away and settle in one direction, and the loose and light particles in another. In this manner, the four kinds or elements were then shaken by the receiving vessel, which, moving like a winnowing machine, scattered far away from one another the elements most unlike, and forced the most similar elements into dose contact. Wherefore also the various elements had different places before they were arranged so as to form the universe. At first, they were all without reason and measure. But when the world began to get into order, fire and water and earth and air had only certain faint traces of themselves, and were altogether such as everything might be expected to be in the absence of God..."

From Valente's Grass Cutting

From Valente's Grass Cutting Sword:

1) "I forgave her, even as she burned against my fog-limbs, even as her ribcage irradiated me with its feathered fire, even as the salt-sea was dried from my mouth by her banishing blow.

After all, we are family, she and I.

Of course I thought of none of this then. Then, there was only the air and the light, and the fall through tiers of stars and ether, the light of her golden heels receding above me, and the earth below, green and checkered with watery rice-fields, their squares made radiant by the reflection of my descent."

2) "It was midwinter, I think—in truth I cannot recall, but it seems to me from the vantage of these copper-blooded innards that the trees were bare and bone-rattled, that the sky was impassive and pale as a face. / It was midsummer, you silly girl, and I watched you walk out under the eaves from a bower of green, and the sun was beating my back with switches of yellow light. So much green, so many leaves, all my heads lolled out of the trees and you saw nothing but bobbing fruit.

It doesn't matter.

I wanted you then, like a husband, in your clean white wimple."

Astulae

Astulae

Quote:

Imagine that your dungeon is not a series of rooms connected together with cobweb-ridden corridors deep underground, but instead, each “room” is a splinter of reality taken from across a grand ensemble of possible parallel realities. Every Astula (a room) can have its own laws of physics, its own peculiarities, and sometimes: its own denizens – some benign, some deadly, and some incomprehensible. In some Astula, magic and technology can coexist side-by-side, and in others both are strongly suppressed.

But many Astula appear to be in a state of decay: slow, or otherwise. In turn, the Astulae are connected to one-another via portals that ultimately creates a large ensemble of realities to explore and navigate between – a mega-dungeon in many respects, but certainly not in a traditional sense.

The configuration is not stable. Portals can be re-routed to other Astula. And new Astulae are added to the ensemble over time to create entirely new pathways and loops through. Will you enter and find a way to profit?

This book is the campaign setting for Astulae and features over 100 highly detailed pocket dimensions (Astula or dungeon-like rooms) across 7 genres (High fantasy, Futuristic, Medieval, Nature, Outlandish, Urban and Waterside), 20 factions or persona who run through these Astulae for your PCs to join with or oppose, almost 50 altered laws of physics and reality or oddities to further flavour each Astula, 36 unique dressings per major Astula genre to further dress the contents of each room, 8 large-scale meta-plots to launch at PCs, and a suggested d6 rules system for groups who don't wish to use the contents in a rules-agnostic manner or adapt them to their own favourite rules set. And that's before all the flavour text and over 70 unique pieces of artwork scattered through the book that can be used as plothooks or inspiration! Jump in to Astulae to plough its depths!

This made me think that perhaps the Multiverse is the infection, and the Far Realm - or at least the part of it associated with fungi - is the antibody. Imagine if your PCs realize they are the only characters on the Wheel with an inner life - everyone else is construct of some primordial substance that comes before even the Astral and Etheral...

Anyway here's the talk - might also be good for Druid PCs or NPCs to have a fungal focus:

Assassination Classroom

" The Earth is threatened by a powerful creature who destroyed 70% of the Moon with its power, rendering into the shape of a crescent moon forever. The creature claims that within a year, Earth will also be destroyed by him, but he offers mankind a chance to avert this fate. In class 3-E at Kunugigaoka Junior High School, he starts working as a homeroom teacher where he teaches his students not only regular subjects, but the ways of assassination. The Japanese government promises a reward of ¥10 billion (i.e. 100 million USD) to whomever among the students succeeds in killing the teacher, whom they have named “Koro-sensei” (殺せんせー Korosensē?, a pun on korosenai (殺せない, unkillable) and sensei (先生, teacher). However, this has proven to be an almost impossible task, as not only does he have several inhuman abilities at his disposal, including the capacity of moving at Mach 20, but he is also the best teacher they’ve ever had."

Archeology of Consciousness

Archeology of Consciousness

"The ancient Greeks had words for two senses of place - chora and topos. Chora is the older of the two terms, and was a holistic reference to place: place as expressively potent, place as experience, place as a trigger to memory, imagination and mythic presence. Topos, on the other hand, signified place in much the way we think of it nowadays - simple location, and the objective, physical features of a locale. Topography. Aristotle took this sense of place, and abstracted it further into the pure concept of position. Ultimately, even sacred places be- came topoi, shorn of their mythic dimension, shorn of chora.

In his Timaeus, Plato, on the cusp of the old mythic worldview and the new rationalist, intellectual order, struggled to define the process of becoming aware of chora, of primeval space. He claimed that chora could not be appre - hended by the senses alone, but required in addition a kind of " bastard reasoning" it could only be known " in a kind of dream, " (Lee, 1965) a phrase Eu - gene Walter interprets as " dreaming with our eyes open " (Walter, 1988). This is not metaphor, it is technique, that Plato was referring to. What he was saying about a special kind of dreaming, was in effect, that we need to place a mythic filter onto our perception if we are to experience chora, the imaginal qualities, of a place. (The visionary poet William Blake expressed this ability well when he stated that " double the vision " was always with him, so that a thistle across his way could also appear to him as " an old man grey. " ) So, in short, chora relates to an engaged, mythic or imaginal sense of place rather than a physical, utilitarian and mundane one. Our present disengagement from a soulful sense of place is leading us to the danger of no longer standing on meaningful ground."

Movie review: Astral City

"The plot is simple and straightforward: Luiz, having died of complications from a gastrointestinal illness around 1930, finds himself in a frightening, misty purgatory known as the Umbral (shadowy) region, from which he escapes only when he summons true repentance and religious feeling. At that point he is transported to the beautiful astral city of the title, where he regains his strength, makes friends, and gradually learns to shed his ego and take joy in the service of others. Eventually he progresses enough to be permitted to undertake a mission to earth, where – in ghostly form – he observes his family and intervenes to restore his widow's new husband to health.

Basically, it's the story of a man who learns to love and, in doing so, redeems himself and comes to a deeper understanding of the meaning and purpose of existence."

We are eaten forever:
http://straitsofanian.blogspot.ca/2014/10/we-are-eaten-forever.html

‘If a Cannibal Bird is fated to appear and quick motivation is needed, a d20 may be thrown to determine what exactly the creature thinks it's up to:
[...]
2. Feasting on corpses. If the party was looking for someone, here they are.
[...]
6. Acting out an ancient drama. The Wind that Bites from the Dark once instrumented a great calamity here, or slew a great hero. The bird wishes to reenact this, and you arrived just in time to facilitate. Roll reaction to determine how dangerous a role it has in mind.
[…]
9. Destroying man-made objects. The bird is tearing down buildings, defacing sculptures, altering trail signs, or otherwise warping humanity's mark on the environment.
10. Dressing itself in grave goods. The beast is pulling clothing from a corpse or pile of refuse, which it will proceed to wear incorrectly. It solicits opinions on its aspect from any onlookers. Anything other than excessive flattery angers it.
11. Hiding and observing. You are being watched really obviously, but without interference. It is far too big to hide behind that bush, or far too humanoid to perch on that branch. It leaves after a few turns, but only if unacknowledged.
12. Pretending to be a human. The bird wants to play at being a headman; you will be the slaves. It wants you to construct a makeshift village out of found materials (or occupy an abandoned one) and go through the drudgery of daily life. In a day or two it will get bored and just wander off.
13. Telling a lie. There is a very specific thing it needs to tell to you and only you. This thing is absolutely untrue; assuming otherwise leads to catastrophe.’

Through that which to others seems a mere dead mass, my eye beholds this eternal life and movement in every vein of sensible and spiritual Nature, and sees this life rising in ever-increasing growth, and ever purifying itself to a more spiritual expression. The universe is to me no longer what it was before—the ever-recurring circle, the eternally-repeated play, the monster swallowing itself up only to bring itself forth again. It has
become transfigured before me, and now bears the one stamp of spiritual life
—a constant progress towards higher perfection in a line that runs out into the Infinite.
-Johann G. Fichte

Nature herself ascends gradually in the determinate series of her creations.
In rude matter she is a simple existence; in organized matter she returns within herself to internal activity, - in the plant to produce form, in the animal motion; (and) in man, as her highest masterpiece, she turns inward that she may perceive and contemplate herself, - in him she, as it were, doubles herself, and, from being mere existence, becomes existence and consciousness in one.

Whose dwelling is the light of setting suns,

A motion and a spirit, that impels
All thinking things, all objects of all thought,

Athar more into the Greater Unknown, or maybe some Druidic faction, or an Upper Planar sect ->

From Sri Aurobindo's poem, Savitri - Book 1, Canto 4, The Secret Knowledge

Our souls can visit in great lonely hours
Still regions of imperishable Light,
All-seeing eagle-peaks of silent Power
And moon-flame oceans of swift fathomless Bliss
And calm immensities of spirit space.
In the unfolding process of the Self
Sometimes the inexpressible Mystery
Elects a human vessel of descent.
A breath comes down from a supernal air,
A Presence is born, a guiding Light awakes,
A stillness falls upon the instruments:
Fixed, motionless like a marble monument,
Stone-calm, the body is a pedestal
Supporting a figure of eternal Peace.
Or a revealing Force sweeps blazing in;
Out of some vast superior continent
Knowledge breaks through trailing its radiant seas,
And Nature trembles with the power, the flame.
A greater Personality sometimes
Possesses us which yet we know is ours:
Or we adore the Master of our souls.
Then the small bodily ego thins and falls;
No more insisting on its separate self,
Losing the punctilio of its separate birth,
It leaves us one with Nature and with God.
In moments when the inner lamps are lit
And the life's cherished guests are left outside,
Our spirit sits alone and speaks to its gulfs.

=-=-=

Godsmen ->

Why should she give her bounty to the dead?
What is divinity if it can come
Only in silent shadows and in dreams?
Shall she not find in comforts of the sun,
In pungent fruit and bright, green winds, or else
In any balm or beauty of the earth,
Things to be cherished like the thought of heaven?
Divinity must live within herself

"....We introduce ourselves, and he picks up a small bag and we walk out to the car. Twenty minutes later we are driving down Shore Drive, which parallels the coast, and he asks me to stop at a super- market. Would I go in and buy two steaks? Sure. In those days I was a vegetarian, really a vegan, and buying steaks for a powerful shaman seems very odd...But hospitality demands his request be honored, so I go into the market and buy him two of the best Porterhouse cuts they have. A mile further and Shore Drive cuts through a state park, and suddenly we are in beach wilderness such as the 16 th century colonists would have seen, and it runs on for several miles. We are about midway through when Rolling Thunder asks me to pull over. Reaching for his bag, he opens the door and gets out of the car, asking me when he is supposed to be at the A.R.E. I think he wants to take a leak. But no; he clearly intends to leave me. About seven p.m., I say, he thanks me, asks me to build a small fire where he is to work, and turns and walks down the bank and into the woods. “Don’t forget the steaks,” he says as he strolls away. He is completely natural in all of this. It is not being done for effect and, as it is happening, it seems the most obvious and appropriate thing for him to be doing. Only, as I watch him vanish into the trees, does it become clear how unusual this is. Presumably he is going to sleep in the woods.

Rolling Thunder reminds me of a Polish sergeant I once met. He was so thoroughly secure in his esoteric skill set that what seemed improbable he did with effortless competence. I realize they are just different kinds of warriors.

....It goes on monotonously. Everything else is silent. Suddenly, I notice that there is a white mist-like form taking shape around and in front of Rolling Thunder’s body. Sometimes I can see it, sometimes not. But it becomes stronger, steadier, until it is continuously present. It is almost dark now, but the fire gives enough light to see. Then it takes form, slowly at first, but as if gathering energy into itself it takes form. I can clearly see that the smoke-like figure is a wolf. Rolling Thunder moves as rhythmically as a clock. Sweep. Sweep. Flick. Sweep. Sweep. Flick.

After about 30 minutes the form be- gins to fade, first losing shape, then be-coming increasingly insubstantial. Finally, it is nothing more than a chimera, there and not there. Then it is gone. Roll-ing Thunder straightens up, and stops. He makes a kind of gesture, and somehow we are released and come forward. The boy is very peaceful. His mother also has come forward, and she leans over him, kissing his forehead. The wound is completely healed. It looks like your skin does when a scab falls off leaving smooth unlined pink skin, shiny in its newness. I am astonished. Clearly so is everyone else. I go over to Hugh Lynn. Hugh Lynn asks me, “What did you see?” I tell him, and when I the mist took form, he says, “Was it a wolf?”

....People are departing. I can hear cars starting and, in the glare of their head-lights, I go over and kick out the fire. Rolling Thunder is there before me. He reaches down and I can see the steaks. Both are withered and gray. One of them hardly looks like meat at all. “You put whatever is wrong into the steak?” “That’s right. The fire will purify and release it. " He throws them into the hot coals. The fat crackles and catches fire. The two of us stand there in silence. It doesn’t take long, and they are gone. During those minutes I don’t know what Rolling Thunder is thinking. But I am trying to reconsider how the world works."

Usual caveat - not endorsing/refuting beliefs:

A group of Chilean women asked me for an act so their souls could rest, distraught as they were over their relatives who had disappeared by force during the reign (1970–1980) of Augusto Pinochet (1915–2006). The members of this society did not have a corpse to grieve over or a grave at which to leave flowers. I recommended:

▶Go to a desert (if not possible, go to a wasteland) and dig holes as deep as possible. At the bottom of each hole, put in a cage, each with a dove that clutches in its claw a small piece of rolled-up parchment paper on which is written the word freedom. Kneel down together around the holes and cry as much as possible for the disappeared. Some relatives go to the bottoms of the holes and open the cages to let the doves escape. Refill the pits by putting quartz crystal rocks in the cages.

Usual caveats for whole post,

Usual caveats for whole post, not endorsing/refuting real world beliefs ->

"Bottom line is, even if you see em coming you're not ready for the big moments. No one asks for their life to change, not really. But it does. So what are we, helpless? Puppets? No. The big moments are gonna come. You can't help that. It's what you do afterwards that counts. That's when you find out who you are. You'll see what I mean."
~ Joss Whedon~

“Admit it. You aren’t like them. You’re not even close. You may occasionally dress yourself up as one of them, watch the same mindless television shows as they do, maybe even eat the same fast food sometimes. But it seems that the more you try to fit in, the more you feel like an outsider, watching the ‘normal people’ as they go about their automatic existences. For every time you say club passwords like ‘Have a nice day’ and ‘Weather’s awful today, eh?’ you yearn inside to say forbidden things like ‘Tell me something that makes you cry’ or ‘What do you think deja vu is for?’ Face it, you even want to talk to that girl in the elevator. But what if that girl in the elevator (and the balding man who walks past your cubicle at work) are thinking the same thing? Who knows what you might learn from taking a chance on conversation with a stranger? Everybody carries a piece of the puzzle. Nobody comes into your life by mere coincidence. Trust your instincts. Do the unexpected. Find the others.”

"...Imagination is not, as some poets have thought, simply synonymous with good. It may be either good or evil. As long as art remained primarily mimetic, the evil which imagination could do was limited by nature. Again, as long as it was treated as an amusement, the evil which it could do was limited in scope. But in an age when the connection between imagination and figuration is beginning to be dimly realized, when the fact of the directionally creator relation is beginning to break through into consciousness, both the good and the evil latent in the working of imagination begin to appear unlimited..."
-Owen Barfield

“All conscious nature has experiences of pleasure and pain. Man alone can deliberately will the repetition of an experience. And repetition, experienced as such, is at the heart, for good and evil, of his faculty of reasoning, and thus makes possible his language, his art, his morality, and indeed his humanity. Yet it is the enemy of life, for repetition is itself the principle, not of life but of mechanism.”

Men go abroad to admire the heights of mountains, the mighty waves of the sea, the broad tides of rivers, the compass of the ocean, and the circuits of the stars, yet pass over the mystery of themselves without a thought.
-Augustine, Confessions

“I like the scientific spirit—the holding off, the being sure but not too sure, the willingness to surrender ideas when the evidence is against them: this is ultimately fine—it always keeps the way beyond open—always gives life, thought, affection, the whole man, a chance to try over again after a mistake—after a wrong guess.”
― Walt Whitman,

“Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life; dream of it; think of it; live on that idea. Let the brain, the body, muscles, nerves, every part of your body be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success, and this is the way great spiritual giants are produced.”

THERE IS A CORNER

THERE IS A CORNER

There is a corner round which we
Will not proceed because we see
Around it, somehow, corner-wise
The dread familiar one denies

But if I take myself in hand
To lead my soul to understand
What mind enclosed will not concede,
Then round that corner it will lead

Then if but once my soul has peered
Despite the corner it has feared
Into another crossing street
Another mind and soul to meet

Who was mere steps behind my fear,
The corner hiding what was near,
I will confront another mind
Which by its terror was confined

Sleeping in the Forest

I thought the earth remembered me,
she took me back so tenderly,
arranging her dark skirts, her pockets
full of lichens and seeds.
I slept as never before, a stone on the river bed,
nothing between me and the white fire of the stars
but my thoughts, and they floated light as moths
among the branches of the perfect trees.
All night I heard the small kingdoms
breathing around me, the insects,
and the birds who do their work in the darkness.
All night I rose and fell, as if in water,
grappling with a luminous doom. By morning
I had vanished at least a dozen times
into something better.

from Sleeping In The Forest by Mary Oliver

Usual caveats about not

Usual caveats about not refuting/endorsing beliefs:

One of the most compelling snares is the use of the term metaphor to describe a correspondence between what the users see on the screen and how they should think about what they are manipulating ... There are clear connotations to the stage, theatrics, magic--all of which give much stronger hints as to the direction to be followed. For example, the screen as "paper to be marked on" is a metaphor that suggests pencils, brushes, and typewriting..,.Should we transfer the paper metaphor so perfectly that the screen is as hard as paper to erase and change? Clearly not. If it is to be like magical paper, then it is the magical part that is all important ...

Yet for all the strict hierarchies implied in the geometric
cartographies of Dante, the Faerie Queene, or Pilgrim's Progress, the
spaces of allegory remain fundamentally phantasmic, dream-like and
metamorphic, as if the very rigidity of their codes produces a surreal
counter-movement. As Fletcher points out, even though allegorical
elements are highly ordered, their causal connections and behavior are far
more magical than rational. This magical ordering describes the mindset of
the Renaissance mage and his highly allegorical science, as well as the
rigorous pseudo-science that undergirds the frequently allegorical nature
of science fiction.

You can journey to your helping spirits for guidance and information, and you can also journey to them when you are in need of healing. The challenge you are facing might have manifested as an emotional or physical issue. In traditional cultures, people in need of healing sought out a shaman who could perform the necessary healing ceremony. Today many people make great progress asking for healing in their own journeys while others do need the healing help of a shamanic practitioner. Many people today misunderstand the healing work performed by shamans. There is a belief that shamanic healing is an active role for the shaman and totally passive for the client. During the healing ceremony, the role of the client might be a passive one. But the client has an active role in doing his or her personal work. In shamanic cultures it is understood that the strength of each person is needed to contribute to the health of the community. Each person knew the personal work needed to be done to return after healing from an illness as a vital community member.

In my experience as a shamanic practitioner, I perceive a clear distinction between curing and healing. If a cure is provided by a shamanic practitioner, by your helping spirits through a journey, or through a dream, it does not mean the work is done. If you have completed a lot of personal work to examine what changes need to be made in your life that will support long-term healing, then the spiritual cure might be the last step of the work. But if you have not done your personal work to examine how your lifestyle, your relationships, your work, and your disconnection with nature are feeding into your mental, emotional, and physical challenges, then the spiritual cure is the beginning of the work.

Usual caveats about not endorsing/refuting beliefs:

"Humans may crave absolute certainty; they may aspire to it; they may pretend, as partisans of certain religions do, to have attained it. But the history of science — by far the most successful claim to knowledge accessible to humans — teaches that the most we can hope for is successive improvement in our understanding, learning from our mistakes, an asymptotic approach to the Universe, but with the proviso that absolute certainty will always elude us."

"There is the universal physical consciousness of nature and there is our own which is a part of it, moved by it, and used by the central being for the support of its expression in the physical world and for a direct dealing with all these external objects and movements and forces. This physical consciousness-plane receives from the other planes their powers and influences and makes formations of them in its own province. Therefore we have a physical mind as well as a vital mind and the mind proper; we have a vital-physical part in us—the nervous being—as well as the vital proper; and both are largely conditioned by the gross material bodily part which is almost entirely subconscient to our experience."

[A]s we gaze up at the heavens, we are looking out into space and
back in time. By thinking about what it means to look at the stars, you are naturally led to conclude that time is a dimension to be included with the usual three dimensions of space. Indeed, if you are truly aware of what you are doing as you look up at the sky; you find that it is impossible to uniquely separate the passage of time and the dimensions of space. This four-dimensional assemblage is called space-time

I believe Bohm’s insight has gained popularity...because of its resonance with an archetypal model found in both religion and philosophy back into antiquity. This archetypal model, stripped to its essence, includes an ultimate reality beyond time and space from which–-somehow–-a de-rived, even illusionary reality manifests. This ultimate reality has gone by a multi-plicity of names, for example Dharmakaya in Buddhism, Ain Sof, or even Ain (noth-ingness) in Kabbalistic Judaism, and so on. Similarly the derived reality has gone by a multiplicity of names, ranging from Maya to Malkuth to “the Matrix.” . . . But do Bohm’s theories belong to the science of physics, or to philosophy? (Kellogg, per-sonal communication, September 26, 2006).

Dreamland Poem by Edgar Allan Poe

By a route obscure and lonely,
Haunted by ill angels only,
Where an Eidolon, named NIGHT,
On a black throne reigns upright,
I have reached these lands but newly
From an ultimate dim Thule-
From a wild clime that lieth, sublime,
Out of SPACE- out of TIME.

Bottomless vales and boundless floods,
And chasms, and caves, and Titan woods,
With forms that no man can discover
For the tears that drip all over;
Mountains toppling evermore
Into seas without a shore;
Seas that restlessly aspire,
Surging, unto skies of fire;
Lakes that endlessly outspread
Their lone waters- lone and dead,-
Their still waters- still and chilly
With the snows of the lolling lily.

By the lakes that thus outspread
Their lone waters, lone and dead,-
Their sad waters, sad and chilly
With the snows of the lolling lily,-
By the mountains- near the river
Murmuring lowly, murmuring ever,-
By the grey woods,- by the swamp
Where the toad and the newt encamp-
By the dismal tarns and pools
Where dwell the Ghouls,-
By each spot the most unholy-
In each nook most melancholy-
There the traveller meets aghast
Sheeted Memories of the Past-
Shrouded forms that start and sigh
As they pass the wanderer by-
White-robed forms of friends long given,
In agony, to the Earth- and Heaven.

For the heart whose woes are legion
'Tis a peaceful, soothing region-
For the spirit that walks in shadow
'Tis- oh, 'tis an Eldorado!
But the traveller, travelling through it,
May not- dare not openly view it!
Never its mysteries are exposed
To the weak human eye unclosed;
So wills its King, who hath forbid
The uplifting of the fringed lid;
And thus the sad Soul that here passes
Beholds it but through darkened glasses.

By a route obscure and lonely,
Haunted by ill angels only,
Where an Eidolon, named NIGHT,
On a black throne reigns upright,
I have wandered home but newly
From this ultimate dim Thule.

I believe a friend of mine

I believe a friend of mine actually worked on Wakfu (the animated series of the game of the same name, based in the same world as Dofus). Small world, right?

Ever actually played The Old Republic? Like The Secret World, it's one of those projects where I really wish it wasn't an MMORPG, or at least that the gameplay was different, because I think the people who would get the most out of it are often turned away by the artificiality of that kind of grindy combat.

Even without the ability to post links, these are some pretty high-quality quotes and posts. I'm always glad to see this thread continue.

Hozier - Take Me To Church

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYSVMgRr6pw

My lover's got humour
She's the giggler at a funeral
Knows everybody's disapproval
Should've worshipped her sooner
If the Heavens ever did speak
She's the last true mouthpiece
Every Sunday's getting more bleak
Fresh poison each week
"We were born sick," you heard them say it
My church offers no absolutes
She tells me worship in the bedroom
The only heaven I'll be sent to
Is when I'm alone with you I was born sick, but I love it
Command me to be well Amen. Amen. Amen

[Chorus x2:]
Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

[Verse 2]
If I'm a pagan of the good times
My lover's the sunlight
To keep the Goddess on my side
She demands a sacrifice
To drain the whole sea
Get something shiny
Something meaty for the main course
That's a fine looking high horse
What you got in the stable?
We've a lot of starving faithful
That looks tasty
That looks plenty
This is hungry work

[Chorus x2:]
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife
Offer me my deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
[Bridge] No masters or kings when the ritual begins
There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene
Only then I am human
Only then I am clean
Amen. Amen. Amen

[Chorus x2:]
Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death

Good God, let me give you my life

“Into this wild Abyss/ The womb of Nature, and perhaps her grave--/ Of neither sea, nor shore, nor air, nor fire,/ But all these in their pregnant causes mixed/ Confusedly, and which thus must ever fight,/ Unless the Almighty Maker them ordain/ His dark materials to create more worlds,--/ Into this wild Abyss the wary Fiend/ Stood on the brink of Hell and looked a while,/ Pondering his voyage; for no narrow frith/ He had to cross. ”

Great stuff Unsung. I really like Corvus Corax - listened to some of their other tracks.

Devendra Banhart - Carmensita reminded me not enough was done with the Land of Ind in Planescape. OTOH D&D in general was backing away from the use of any real gods which is arguably for the best...

Royal Straight Flush made me think we really need to know more about social life in Planescape, especially Sigil. What's dating like? Clubbing? What's the music scene?

Professor Elemental rap is just brilliant!

Rogue Galaxy made me think of Eberron, and how that kind of techno-magic should be somewhat more prevalent in Planescape. I liked the Spelljammer feels though!

Bioshock Infinite is a great game for PS inspiration. The world, the metaphysics, the characters. All awesome.

Septimus (free rpg)

Septimus (free rpg)

http://drivethrurpg.com/product/63991/Bill-Coffins-Septimus

"Bill Coffin's Septimus sets the players inside a Dyson Sphere made from an unknown and unknowable alien technology. Faction pitted against faction to control the sphere and the amazing technology therein -- a technology so great that no weakness cannot be eliminated and even death is not final. But, even as the obsessed techno-cult, the Sindivar Extant seeks to build a Utopia around Septimus' many nanofoundries, a dark secret spreads. The same technology that is a boon to so many billions of people contains a flaw, a flaw that may have spelled doom to the great originators, a flaw that threatens to crush Septimus and its inhabitants, even before the greatest of secrets yet remains undiscovered

Whether you fight alongside the Extant and the Cadre, or whether you join one of the many factions seeking to wrestle power and wealth from the Cult, you are sure to find a game that is right for you."

Nightmare on Hill Manor (free adventure)

http://drivethrurpg.com/product/92564/Nightmare-on-Hill-Manor

"There are times when the rational world seems, if only for a second, to fall away. The leaves rustling in the trees on a still day. The movement just past the corner of your eye. We are taught to ignore the foolish impulse to react.

But for those who look too long, too closely, there is another world pulsing just behind the façade of the one we know. Unimaginable things skitter by in the darkness, and sometimes they intrude on the reasonable, ordered world. They seep from the shadows, they rattle their chains and they force you to look. If you're lucky--very, very lucky--you'll survive what you see.

But you'll never be the same again."

Loaded Dice: The Magic Vampire

http://www.koboldpress.com/k/front-page19417.php#.VTiHA5OYVz8

"An eternal debate has raged between players who love arcane spellcasters; sorcerer or wizard? The sorcerer has more flexibility, but tends to be a lot narrower in which spells the character can cast, while the wizard knows more spells but has to try and guess which ones will be needed that day. The former gives you a bloodline and special powers, but the latter gives you a school specialty… but why choose one or the other now that you have the arcanist?"

Songs for faction minstrels

I was on the fence about The Little Prince before they started showing the animation for the story itself. Now I'm totally onboard.

I was reading through Septimus, but got distracted. On a tangential note, transhumanism and the intellectual potential possibly attainable by an unshackled AI are great parallels for the Godsman view of mortal ascension. So if you’re looking for inspiration....

Great stuff Unsung. I do

Great stuff Unsung. I do think there's a place for "transhumanism" in PS,just have to shift things a bit. For example you might have people "uploading" their souls into sensory stones, which of course means the necessity of guarding against shadow fiends stealing then.

The dystopian side of cyberpunk, for example, could slide into Sigil or even beyond if you're running a cynical campaign where the celestials are hypocrites/fanatics.

The resistance, IMO, would be a matter of aesthetics and to a lesser extent metaphysics. But technology - which when you come down it is development based on reality's rules - need not have the look and feel it would in our reality. It can be like Eberron, or build itself up from some alchemical, pre-scientific, or occult metaphysical positions.

On the aesthetic side the Bioshock games do a good job of keep a feel that IMO would work well in PS. (Especially since I'm gravitating away from the Wheel and looking more at a multiverse akin to White Wolf's Umbra...)

Accompanied by the snarky yet heartfelt narration of this comatose patient, the player will guide him through fantastical forests, dark caverns and deceptive worlds of water and ice that directly relate to his emotional state at each point in his journey. 'Planar Binding Options

The young man appeared calm, his lank blond hair falling over his eyes as he gesticulated and spoke the words of power. His trembling hands gave him away, however.

A ruddy light glowed within the circle of power, and then a bang reverberated around the room. The young jumped involuntarily, but his invocation never faltered. Smoke poured and roiled in the circle, and a clawed hand reached out, testing the barrier. It was thrown back by a blast of silver sparks.

“The blood, boy! Give it the blood!” Another voice, old and tremulous, shook the youth from his daze. The young man waved his hand, and a small bowl brimming with thick, crimson liquid moved rapidly through the air and into the circle. They heard a hungry lapping sound within the circle.

The smoke cleared to reveal a tiny gremlin tipping the bowl back, drinking heartily of the vital fluid. The master wizard clapped his apprentice on the back.

“A little small, but not bad for your first try.”'

An Elementary Look at the

An Elementary Look at the Planes

http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/elementary-look-planes

"...The Great Wheel was officially incorporated into Advanced Dungeons & Dragons in the Player’s Handbook (1978). Meanwhile, over in Dragon magazine, author Jefferson Swycaffer was contemplating other possibilities. In Dragon 27 (July 1979), Swycaffer suggested a complex set of eighteen planes. First, he introduced four new elements—cold, dry, hot, and moist—each of which lay between two of the existing elements. Then he added two new planes lying above and below the elemental planes: good and evil. Finally, he added four planes between good and the elements—beginning, fertility, light, and pleasure—and four planes that lay between evil and the elements—barren, darkness, ending, and pain. The result was an elemental globe.

Though Swycaffer’s elemental planes were totally unofficial, Gygax liked the idea. In Dragon 32 (December 1979), Gygax said that he also had been thinking about the elemental “borderlands.” He revealed the results in Deities & Demigods (1980), which contained the first official expansion of the elemental planes. Now four paraelemental planes lay between the various elemental planes: ice between air and water; dust between air and fire; heat between fire and earth; and vapor between earth and water.

Three years later, the elemental planes grew again..."

"D&D fifth edition (2014) largely returned to the older Great Wheel cosmology, but the Inner Planes retain aspects of the World Axis. The four elemental planes are back, but they remain tightly integrated with the material plane as its creative foundation. The paraelemental planes have also returned for the first time since Planescape, but they have more evocative names. The Plane of Ash is known as the Great Conflagration, the Plane of Ice is the Frostfell, the Plane of Magma is the Fountains of Creation, and the Plane of Ooze is the Swamp of Oblivion. Additionally, the Elemental Chaos is the churning realm within which the Inner Planes are held."

Cory Doctorow: Cold Equations and Moral Hazard

http://www.locusmag.com/Perspectives/2014/03/cory-doctorow-cold-equations-and-moral-hazard/

"The thing I treasure about science fiction is its utility as a toolkit for thinking about the relationship between technological change and human beings. This is why I value ‘‘design fiction’’ so much: an architect might make a visualization that flies you through her as-yet-unbuilt building, an engineer might build a prototype to show you what he’s thinking of inventing, but through design fiction, a writer can take you on a tour of how a person living with that technology might feel. That’s the kind of contribution to the discussion about which technology we should make, and how we should use it, that can make all the difference."

"In truth there is nothing anywhere that moves, though all is in motion. ‘Things’ are the images that clothe the viewless path of Eros as he flies. With each beat of his wings an image flashes into being, to vanish at the next instant and be replaced by another. When such images resemble one another closely we speak of things which move unchanged, while, when they are dissimilar, we speak of changing objects. Whether at rest in seeming self-identify of being, or whether changing like a summer cloud, all things are flashing sparks, the gleaming incandescent path of the invisible lightning cleaving the night. When man shall be able to seize a living flame and seal it in a jar to keep it as his possession, then and then only may he hope to grasp and hold those illusory ‘things’ that, like a desert mirage, lure his heart’s desire. We strive to catch them in our net and, like fairy gold, they dissolve before our eyes, leaving our hands empty and our ears filled by the sound of invisible wings, the laughing divine wings throbbing onwards into the Future."

Mindjammer RPG:

Mindjammer RPG:

http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/126093/Mindjammer--The-Roleplaying-Game--FREE-PREVIEW

Interestingly enough the sci-fi Mind Jammer setting has a concept that I think might fit well with a faction or planar empire. Basically the Mindscape is a shared thought space that ensures cultural similarity despite the separation of vast distances.

Beyond that is the idea that humanity has made multiple attempts at interstellar travel using slower-than-light travels. Finally after figuring out FTL on Earth they begin to expand and realize humans have adapted to the varied worlds they are on, and not everyone is down with the new head honchos of Earth - The Commonality.

Perhaps the use of portals is completely broken on the world the PCs are from, and when they are finally fixed the PCs find their brethren on varied planes.

This also ties into another possibility - the PCs, upon finally being able to leave their planet, learn their world was a planar nexus and responsible for an empire like that of the Illithids or Spellweavers, one that dominated life across the Wheel. Loathing, reverence, and other reactions would make things different than if they are just one more group of Clueless.

I want to get back into Final Fantasy, and I could see this one playing well. But it feels like they're dragging Tetsuya Nomura's character designs into a world where they kind of don't want to go.

Rough lyrics translation:

2 Falcons

I dug my love a green grave,
I lowered her down into the fern
2 falcons flew above
And one of them hit the other hard
And red drops fell

Until the veil falls,
Until the silence is broken,
Stay by my side, please don't wake me
Until the winter is over,
Until the day dawns,
Stay by my side, please don't wake me

On the next night, I met my love
In the forest, among animals, she had awoken
2 falcons led us both in slumber
And further down, led us on the way

We are lying together at the end of the night,
We were the ghosts we were calling out to
We are standing at the edge, peering down,
The deep doesn't hold us (back) anymore
