On the history of Planar Common

ripvanwormer's picture

(note that in the following essay, I'm making a lot of things up - I'm not attempting to stick to what is known in canon)

The issue here is Planar Common, the dominant language in the City of Doors and other human-dominated planewalker communities on the planes. Where did it come from?

The Planewalker's Handbook (page 101) said that Planar Common descends from the Prime Common tongue, brought to the planes by prime explorers. In fact, it says "the earliest planar settlers from the Prime," which suggests that this couldn't possibly be the modern Common Tongue of Toril or Oerth or Krynn.

OOC: Concerning Vlaakith CLVIII/Gith the Liberator

Chaotic_Goth1431's picture

Greeting to all you berks, bloods and cutters!

Recently, I was asked by my best friend to DM a campaign which shall, at a later point, include Her Imperial and Eternal Majesty Vlaakith CLVIII. My dilemma is this: how to portray her accurately in terms of personality.....the good, the bad and the ugly? I have a fairly certain idea of how to do it, but I would prefer having those who *know* of Gith to steer me in the right direction. I want her to be a memorable character worthy of the fear and awe she deserves. I would especially appreciate the advice of those who play githyanki.

City of Brass coming to Dragon

Looks like Wizards wants to devote a lot of attention to the City of Brass this month. I, for one, am very intrigued by the teaser. I've always had an interest in the city but I've also always felt it gets little more attention than "here there be efreet." IIRC a 3e book had a section on the city but it was more about physical locations. This upcoming article sounds like it will involve culture and society more than geography.

I will begin with some information on Modro

Concidering Anarchy

I'm sure it's not just me, as evident by the much less demonizing description they get in the 3E conversion, but the original Planescape books really don't seem very fond of the Revolutionary league.

WotC's Lady of Pain cartoon

Kobold Avenger's picture

There's a new cartoon this time from the ones that brought "Rawr I'm a Monster!" where this time they interview the Lady of Pain. It's at the WotC site as the DMG2 interview.

I think you can say that's a skill challenge gone wrong.
